As a woman of Chinese origin, I cannot imagine life without my green tea. Like many kids who grew up in immigrant households, I take all my green tea BLACK, the way it’s meant to be (no milk or sugar, please)!
However, the one time I need to make an exception is with matcha green tea. Matcha green tea is powdered green tea leaves, which is far more potent than drinking green tea. Because of the potency and bitterness that comes with it, combined with its ability to be made into hangover fighting machine, I make it into a delicious, antioxidant-rich power smoothie.
Matcha green tea is high in l-theanine, an amino acid that has been proven to protect against the damaging effects of alcohol on the liver. Also high in polyphenol antioxidants, this super-smoothie can help fight free radicals damaging your cells after your night out drinking.
Combined with some other super foods, this smoothie will help you with your hangover woes! Read below to hear why I included each ingredient.
RECIPE: Matcha Green Tea Recovery Smoothie
makes 1 serving
Ingredients
½ cup coconut water (for electrolytes)
½ avocado (for heart healthy monounsaturated fats. Avocados also just taste good in smoothies)!
½ cup Greek Yogurt (for protein. I use 2% fat) + 1 dollop for garnish
A few handfuls of baby spinach (for antioxidants and adds a beautiful green colour)
1 frozen banana (for potassium – an electrolyte, and fructose – aka natural fruit sugar to stabilize blood sugar)
1 tsp Matcha Green Tea Powder + a sprinkle for garnish
1 Tbsp Honey (Optional. Will help stabilize blood sugar, especially if you used unsweetened coconut water).
Instructions
- Blend all ingredients together in a blender. Pour into a glass.
- Top with a dollop for garnish and sprinkle with a bit of matcha green tea powder.
